Paul Celan–”Was uns … ” / “What tossed us …”

Was uns
zusammenwarf,
schrickt auseinander,

ein Weltstein, sonnenfern,
summt.

Paul Celan

What tossed us
together,
startles apart,

a worldstone, sun-distant,
hums.

Readers–Jeffrey J. Cohen has recorded some memorable reflections on this poem, Paul Celan, and Stone at his blog Future Lost Archive. Also, his post includes a really striking photograph of a stone relief that is part of Paris’ Mémorial du Martyr Juif Inconnu –a place I must visit soon.
