Edna St. Vincent Millay: “Autumn Daybreak”

Posted by matt on 20 October 2008

AUTUMN DAYBREAK
Cold wind of autumn, blowing loud
At dawn, a fortnight overdue,
Jostling the doors, and tearing through
My bedroom to rejoin the cloud,
I know–for I can hear the hiss
And scrape of leaves along the floor–
How may boughs, lashed bare by this,
Will rake the cluttered sky once more.
Tardy, and somewhat south of east,
The sun will rise at length, made known
More by the meagre light increased
Than by a disk in splendour shown;
When, having but to turn my head,
Through the stripped maple I shall see,
Bleak and remembered, patched with red,
The hill all summer hid from me.

Charles Baudelaire: “L’Invitation au Voyage”

L’INVITATION AU VOYAGE
Mon enfant, ma soeur,
Songe à la douceur
D’aller là-bas vivre ensemble!

Décoreraient notre chambre;

Dont l’humeur est vagabonde;
C’est pour assouvir
Ton moindre désir
Qu’ils viennent du bout du monde.
–Les soleils couchants
Revêtent les champs,
Les canaux, la ville entière,
D’hyacinthe et d’or;

Edna St Vincent Millay: Sonnet XI

Posted by matt on 20 October 2007

I shall forget you presently, my dear,

So make the most of this, your little day,

Your little month, your little half a year,

Ere I forget, or die, or move away,

And we are done forever; by and by

I shall forget you, as I said, but now,

If you entreat me with your loveliest lie

I will protest you with my favourite vow.

I would indeed that love were longer-lived,

And oaths were not so brittle as they are,

But so it is, and nature has contrived

To struggle on without a break thus far, –

Whether or not we find what we are seeking

Is idle, biologically speaking.
